Remember I promised you to come back from Brazil with a great Brazilian caipirinha recipe?! I took that job very seriously and drank A LOT of them, just for educational purposes of course.
To be quite honest I never much liked Caipirinha cocktails before. If I had the choice I would always go for a Mojito instead. Even when I drank my last one in Germany for picture purposes I was a bit underwhelmed and not really looking forward to them
That all changed with my first sip of a real Brazilian Caipirinha and the realization that it is the best dish I would find here. Yes, that’s right I am calling it a dish.
The secret for a good (Freudian typo – I spelled ‘good’ as ‘god’) Caipirinha is not only a good Cachaça but also to add a lot more sugar than you would probably care to know. But believe me, it really needs those two good tablespoons.
Jorge Amado – Brazilian Caipirinha
While in Paraty, the Cachaça capital of Brazil, we visited a distillery where we learned that Cachaça is basically the cheap stepsister of Rum. However, it can taste quite wonderful on its own when aged or infused with herbs. With that said, I am not going to give you some random Brazilian drink recipes, but show you how to make the ultimate Brazilian Caipirinha – the Jorge Armado.
Jorge Amado was not only Brazil’s most famous writer but also has a cocktail named after him that tastes like Christmas in a glass and uses a Brazilan Cachaça version called Gabriela (also the name of one of his novels), which is infused with cloves and cinnamon. A Jorge Amado has passionfruit as well as limes and usually you cannot get it anywhere outside of Paraty.
Again, one mustn’t be fooled by this innocent, healthy looking cocktail. After one, I just ordered a Jorge as the full name proved too much and after two, I just kept on calling it a Georgie, the Portuguese pronunciation was usually beyond me at this point.
With its cinnamon and clove taste, it is an absolutely perfect Glühwein alternative in warmer weathers. So I bought an extra bottle to take it with me to Cape Town and made Christmas cocktails for our tree decorating afternoon.
As limes are sometimes hard to come by here and we had a drought that made it even harder, I had to use lemons. I also used brown sugar which worked perfectly, adding even more of a rustic Christmas taste to it. I went mainly by taste, but if you wanted to recreate it, here you go…
Jorge Amado/ Brazilian Caipirinha Recipe
1-2 shot glasses of Gabriela caipirinha rum
1 lime or ½ lemon quartered
1 good tablespoon brown sugar
No soda needed – all the liquid will come from the fruit and the shaken ice!
Glitter reindeers and brownie mix optional but highly recommended.
Put all but the ice in a cocktail shaker and use a pestle to mix them and to slightly squeeze the lime/lemon. Add ice and shake well. Make sure that the cocktail shaker is sealed properly otherwise, you may end up with Jorge Amado in your cleavage, which is not as nice as it sounds.
Afterward, it is pour & devour. Please remember, the same rule applies for Jorge Amados as it does for Vodka Martinis: they are like breasts – one is not enough, three are too much and once you start calling it a Georgie it is definitely time to stop.
As you can see, the reindeer didn’t get the memo!
