If there is anything better and fancier than staying at a nice hotel, it is staying at a nice hotel in your own city. Can you imagine anything more decadent? Believe me I like the idea of 'home' as much as the next person, but there is something wonderfully indulgent about crisp linens, room service, and not having to make the bed in the moring yourself. Not that I actually make my bed in any case, but still...

The perfect opportunity came along to play tourist in my own city when my friend Claire from Cape Town announced her visit en route to Düsseldorf for a work trip. Of course, a weekend in a harbor city was asking for a nautical-themed hotel and luckily the 25hours hotel hamburg hafencity was kind enough to host us.

View of Hamburg from bed for Claire, crisp linens for me and all that was missing from our cabin was our own personal sailor.

Unfortunately, the concierge couldn't help with that request either and the sailor had to stay out in the hall.

On Friday, I took a half day (yes, even for freelancers that's a thing!) and arrived in the Hafencity with my weekender bag, umbrella, and sunglasses. In Hamburg, you never know what the weather gods may give you and when they care to change their minds. Just like a golfer, a Hamburg doesn't know bad weather only bad clothing (golfer wisdom courtesy of my dad).

To pass the time while waiting for Claire, I went for a visit home, or rather to "Heimat", the hotel's downstairs restaurant for some classic fish 'n chips and wine.

As this was served with a side of very grey sky I decided it was time to christen the bed and I slid under the covers with this little guy.

Unfortunately, he didn't last long and so I spent my afternoon napping and watching Grey's Anatomy, the only kind of grey I like.

An hour and a half later than expected I finally got a knock on my door and Claire had arrived. Not only was the hotel apparently keeping my existence very secret and wouldn't let her up, but the subway had as well. Subway stations' names should never be translated into another language. While I had the best intentions when I told her to switch trains at central station, I didn't realize that all signs on the Hamburg trains are still in German and "Hauptbahnhof" looks nothing like "Central Station". Ups. Dear HVV, can we please look into this? Luckily she didn't hold it against me too much...

After reading my post with my Hamburg favorites, Claire had declared that she definitely needed to have a Wiener Schnitzel at Bistrot Vienna for her visit. The timing was perfect as we were hungry and even after an eternity in business that place is still busy as a bee and you will need to get there really early to score a table. When we arrived at 6.30 pm (!!!) we got the last table outside. Brrrr. But we would both do quite a bit for a good schnitzel and so the two South African sunshine lovers braved the arctic temperatures and cuddled up with blankets and Crémant.

We kept warm with fish soup, the biggest schnitzel ever, and lots of chatting about life, travels, and the best tiramisus we have had in our life. I may or may not have sneaked in some dive stories...

I lieu of tiramisu we devoured an Austrian dessert plate (closest to real German food I could get for Claire) before leaving to have an early night. We barely made it out, as the whole of the restaurant was covered in people - again, come early or bring some comfy shoes!

Back at the 25hours we ditched their live music session and used the extra hour for some extra snoozing. While Claire used her jet lag as an excuse, I simply blamed those crisp linens.
And apparently it was just this extra hour that Hamburg needed too in order to welcome us the next morning with this view and blue skies:

Hamburg, you show off! Why don't we see you blue more often?
