I wanted to do a little recap of 2016, but I didn't feel like putting up the usual post of what I did and where I went.
What I started to do this year and loved, was to take animal selfies of really anything that would get in front of a lens with me. Mind you, I am using the term selfie loosely as it is quite hard to dive, not smash into anything and take a picture of yourself that will show you AND the manta ray. So sometimes I asked for help and yes, I will still call it a selfie and hope you will forgive me the error in semantics.
Quite frankly I am a bit self-conscious sharing this post. I hate to have my picture taken at the best of times and a lot of these pictures were taken under less than ideal circumstances. Yes, I really do get THAT sweaty!
Other travel bloggers seem to be a lot more glamorous and put together. There was even one picture I saw with a girl walking amongst seals on a beach, wearing a tiny string bikini, all tanned and shiny. This could never be me so I think you will understand that the thought of being compared to women like this makes me a tad bit shy.
Having that said - I love my shots. I can still feel the excitement taking each and every one of them and they remind me of a year full of adventures and make me happy.
So I said, screw the sweat, the double chin, the lack of glamorous string bikini and let me just share my absolute favorite animal selfies of 2016 with you.
Animal Selfies 2016*
*in chronological order, not by preferred animal!
Me & my Huskie, Lapland
Isn't he a beauty? I was only allowed to play with them after they had their run, but it was worth the wait. Such fun and wonderful dogs!
Me & my reindeer, Lapland
I will admit that this is a really crappy selfie even for my standards. But they are technically still wild Reindeer and we were asked not to touch them or get too close. Also, this was taken out of a moving sled. Kids, don't try that at home!
Me & my camel, Morocco
His name was Mogador and I immediately fell for his smile.
Me & my elephant, Sri Lanka
We had almost given up on finding any during our elephant safari but then bamm! - there was a whole herd. I even won a price for my elephant picture because I kind of had to as the Midnight Blue Elephant as I reminded the organizers.
Me & my giraffe, South Africa
This was one of my favorites! Can you believe that while I adore giraffes above all else I haven't seen that many nor taken a selfie with them?! So yeah, that was an exciting day.
Me & my lion cubs, South Africa
We tracked the lions for a few hours and finally got lucky: lion cubs taking a nap after feeding time. I would have loved to get closer but that was obviously a no-no. Still, lion cub selfie ticked off the list!
Me & my orangutan, Borneo
While I was fortunate enough to have seen orangutans in the wild before, I didn't get a proper selfie last time. So back in Borneo, I was on a mission. This one came super close very unexpectedly and was a huge male which I guess explains my face.
Me & my dragon, Komodo
"Is he dead?" was the question I got most when people saw this picture. No, he was just very very old and didn't move much. Probably the reason why I felt brave enough to get somewhat close and finally have my very own how to train your dragon moment.
Me & my manta, Bali
Oh, what a glorious dive that was! We just hung out at a manta feeding station for an hour and took picture after picture of these amazing creatures. After getting almost swam over by a pregnant manta woman because I was fumbling with my camera, I asked my dive master instead of attempting a selfie afterward.
Me & my monkey, Bali
I am still working on a post about the Monkey Forest in Ubud and my thoughts about it, but this moment was priceless. Julia and I weren't even in the forest yet, when we got attacked, had my water bottle stolen and were basically experiencing a live version of the Jungle Book.
Me & my Highland cow, Scotland
Okay, I said I didn't have favorites but maybe I just liked this one a little bit more than the others. Because really this is not just a Highland cow selfie, this is a Highland calf selfie! Also, a very special someone found it for me which made the moment all the more well, special.
What were your favorite moments you wish you would have or did take a selfie of in 2016?
